What is F.u.b.u

F.U.B.U. Fest is envisioned as an accessible arts and music festival for Unionville's Black residents welcoming both native and non-native Black Macon citizens. F.U.B.U. Fest is a community-driven arts and music festival designed to celebrate and uplift Black creatives by featuring Black musicians, artists, vendors, and partners, making the Festival For Unionville, By Unionville.

A core objective of the project is to elevate and provide a platform for Black creatives—especially local artists—ensuring their work is seen, celebrated, and engaged with by the broader community. Additionally, the festival is designed as a collaborative effort with the Unionville community, integrating residents at every stage—from initial engagement to festival development—to ensure that the event reflects and responds to their needs and aspirations. Through this process, the project seeks to contribute to the long-term healing and revitalization of Unionville, using the arts as a vehicle for transformation. Lastly, this initiative will serve as a living archive, preserving the stories, histories, and cultural narratives of Unionville residents. By documenting these lived experiences, the festival will create a lasting record that honors the past while envisioning a more equitable and vibrant future for the community.

why f.u.b.u exists

Unionville, a historically Black neighborhood, continues to experience the long-term effects of systemic barriers, including poverty, housing instability, health disparities, and limited access to the arts because of historic redlining practices. While many of Macon’s cultural events are concentrated downtown, residents of Unionville are often excluded due to economic and geographic barriers.

F.U.B.U. Fest is a direct response to these disparities. By bringing high-quality arts programming into Unionville, the festival fosters local pride, challenges dominant narratives of poverty and violence, and demonstrates the vibrancy of Black creativity in Macon. As a former resident of Unionville, I believe this neighborhood deserves celebration, investment, and recognition—not just for its challenges, but for its resilience, culture, and artistry. F.U.B.U. Fest is more than an event; it is a movement to reclaim space, build community, and ensure that Unionville is seen, heard, and valued.

why now

Implementing Arts & Culture in a community is a wholistic approch to community development and healing. This festival with begin to foster a sense of community pride, letting people – especially younger people know that this community deserves to be celebrated. Unionville’s accessible history is also limited and media controls the narrative of the neighborhood. This festival wil also serve as a living archive of stories from residents allowing us to create our own narratives from our own perspectives.
